Taupu Surf School
WOLLONGONG, NSW
| The founders of Taupu Surf School are lifetime recreational surfer and former criminal lawyer, Tauri D’Eatough, and mature age body boarder and indigenous human rights expert, Kari Kristiansen. They established the school in 2003 after years working in social justice, in particular with young indigenous people. Tauri first picked up a board when she was “six or seven” and says "I have been a sailor, a surfer, a diver, swimmer, and rower. |
| "I don't know where that came from in my soul, that really deep yearning for the ocean, but take me away from it and my gills would dry out." The best part of the job for the instructors of Taupu Surf School is “the look of joy on a person’s face when they first stand on the surfboard, even if it is only for a nanosecond!” Taupu Surf School operates from North Wollongong and Thirroul. While Tauri has surfed all over Australia, in Fiji and off Reunion Island, her favourite break remains Sharkie’s Beach at Coledale. Out of the water, Tauri and Kari recommend doing the Grand Pacific Drive over the spectacular Seacliff Bridge. |
