Steve Foreman started surfing in 1965 at age 10 on the NSW South coast. His first board was a 70s classic a Gordon Woods four metre three-stringer so heavy he could hardly carry it. Born at just the right time, Steve was part of the generation of pioneer surfers who travelled Australia's east coast in search of the perfect uncrowded wave.Landing in Byron Bay in 1973, he began surf coaching a decade or so later when it became clear that the people asking him to do it were not likely to stop.If success with professional board-riders is a measure of a coaches capabilities,Steve has an enviable record, most notably with Australia's elite women surfers. Taking on a promising Bondi junior named Pauline Menczer in 1988, Steve guided his charge to the women's world title in 1993. Another Sydney girl destined for greatness took up with Steve in the 1990s before heading to Hawaii to cement her place in surfing history. Six world titles later, Layne Beachley returned to Australia and under Steves tutelage won her seventh Association of Surfing Professionals crown in 2006, a feat unlikely ever to be replicated. Today Steve employs his experience and patience teaching beginners through to tour professionals, and is regional coaching director for Surfing Far North Coast. He started coaching in 1987 and at least one of his charges has ranked among the worlds top five professional surfers for 20 consecutive years.Website: www.sunrisesurfing.com
