Point Lonsdale Surf School

Interested in learning how to surf in Victoria? Point Lonsdale (near Queenscliff) is the place to go! Point Lonsdale School of Surfing (PLSS) is a family business that is run by Mark Phipps, one of Victoria’s most recognized surfers and surfboard shapers.

The Phipps family comprising of Mark & Christine and their two daughters, have a pretty cool story. They spend half their year in Point Lonsdale, Victoria, and the other half in Hossegor in the south west of France, living an ‘Endless Summer’ lifestyle.

The surf school, open year round, specializes in catering for the needs of students, whether they are kids on holiday, mums & dads just wanting to have a go, or travellers passing through. Corporate Groups are catered for with a whole package - surfing is an individual sport, but getting there and spending time on the beach is a great team building adventure.

All lessons are undertaken in a Marine National Park. Surfing in places where sea life is abundant and ships pass through. Seahorses roam underwater and dolphins are regularly spotted during classes, there are also magnificent views of the Rip and Pt. Nepean.

Mark Phipps began surfing at the age of 6. His competitive career includes a fourth at the World Amateur Titles in 1992, a 3rd place in an Australian Open Title, and numerous Victorian titles.

Mark is also an extremely talented surfboard shaper. Names such as Jeremy Flores, Gary ‘Kong’ Elkerton, Josh Fuller, Maz Quinn and Toby Martin all ride his boards. Many of today’s top professional surfers ride his boards in WCT and WQS competitions. He also is one of Quiksilver Surfboards main International Shapers. Surfboards are very personal crafts being mainly hand shaped and it’s great to be able to discuss your requirements with the actual shaper. If after your lesson you want to purchase a surfboard, getting one custom made to your ability is easy.
