Central Coast Surf School

AT AVOCA - TERRIGAL - UMINA CENTRAL COAST, NSW

Owned and operated by Kelly Smith, Central Coast Surf School is the longest-running surf school in this region of NSW. Kelly’s dad was one of Umina’s pioneer wave-riders, back in the day when you lugged your 55lb timber board to the beach just once, then stashed it in the dunes so you didn’t have to carry it to the beach every time the swell rolled in.

Kelly has his old man to thank for getting him onto a board when he was four years old; younger brother Cory followed Kelly onto the waves and, as well as being the family’s first university graduate, is something of a favourite with female learn-to-surfers at Central Coast Surf School.

Kelly takes most classes and private lessons at Umina Beach, while up the road at Avoca Beach, colleague Beau Atchison is in charge.

Beau mixes teaching at Central Coast Surf School with competing in World Qualifying Series tour events, following an illustrious junior career that culminated in a fifth place finish in the World Junior Championships in 2006.

The school’s other lead instructor is Terrigal-based World Qualifying Series veteran Glenn Hall, who’s been on the verge of qualifying for the elite pro tour more times than he would care to tell you.

Together at Central Coast Surf School, Kelly, Beau and Glenn apply their board-riding talent and coaching experience to sharing with beginners the joy of surfing and to moulding the next crop of potential tour professionals.
